There are at least three main keys to approaching the world of Terre Sicane.
Three themes that offer opportunities for knowledge as well as relaxation and enjoyment of the senses.
Encounters with the people of these areas will always bring richness whether we are discussing with some artist, enjoying the preparations of our hostess, or witnessing the typical hard and tiring day of a shepherd.
Certainly what each visitor will not be able to forget about his or her experience in the Terre Sicane will be precisely the faces and stories, the smiles and the welcome he or she will have enjoyed.
We are in an area dense with history, an area where many populations have succeeded one another and intermingled, each leaving countless traces over the centuries.
And just as in many other parts of the island, different cultures and traditions have settled, often harmonizing, in the Terre Sicane, creating the myriad suggestions and attractions of a solid Mediterranean civilization.
Suffice it to mention the archaeological area, full of legends, of Sant’Angelo Muxaro; the historical sites of Alessandria della Rocca; the Frederician castle of Giuliana; the square of Palazzo Adriano; the mining history of Casteltermini; the castle of Cammarata; the archaeological remains of Raffadali; the not-so-ancient, but suggestive, castle of Joppolo Giancaxio; the bread arches of San Biagio Platani… to name but a few.
And everywhere churches, large small, very rich or bare, all telling pieces of peoples’ history and then palaces built over time by the lords of the area who, not infrequently, competed to show their importance and power through the magnificence of a building or church.
Let us not forget the military fortresses and small but well-kept and beloved old towns.
Not to mention the beauty of the engaging pagan and religious festivals and the precious handicrafts: pottery, woven palms, lace and a thousand other things all to be discovered.
Eating in the Terre Sicane is a long and continuous bewitching experience. The cuisine is the result of a mixture of biodiversity provided by a generous nature, a mild climate, and the cultural legacies of the different peoples who have lived in these places and to whom they brought different crops.
We are in an area where Sicilian viticulture is at its best: the vineyards outline an extremely fascinating landscape, and the grapes and wine made from them are themselves culture as well as history and economy.
Just move around the Sican lands and you will come across great historic brands, but also new products, promoted by young winemakers who are contributing to giving substance to the oenological excellence and image of Sicilian wine.
Traditional grape varieties such as Nero d’Avola and Perricone, Catarratto and Inzolia and many others coexist alongside quality internationals.
And then if you talk about extra virgin olive oil you “fall” big time, thanks to the cultivation of Nocellara, Cerasuola and Biancolilla.
In short, at the table, in the Terre Sicane shine products that are the offspring of an agriculture rich in sunshine, flavors and fragrances.
A few examples: the Vastedda del Belice along with ricotta and pecorino cheeses, prickly pears, cherries, citrus fruits, typical sweets, garden produce (including artichokes and tomatoes), all the way to fish from a rich and unspoiled sea.
If you decide to come to the Terre Sicane you will live immersed in nature, breathing pure air and enjoying a nature that with each season changes while still giving always beauty.
From the mountains to the hills and all the way to the sea, there are a thousand views and a thousand opportunities for an outdoor experience.
And it will still be a success, whether you take a simple walk along the country paths or try your hand at sporting activities or tougher treks moving between the Mediterranean maquis and the beach not to mention the beauty of traversing these fantastic landscapes while riding a horse.
Between the original Maccalube of Aragona and the blue sea, between silent forests and gentle, welcoming hills, between fine sand dunes and the Platani MouthNature Reserve… everyone will be able to find their ideal place and landscape
