Altamore Company, pasta is a real passion
Goal quality and closing the supply chain, a dream passed from father to son
In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in Giuliana, the beautiful medieval village in the Palermitan area dominated by the Frederician castle, the family-run Altamore farm was established with grandfather Francesco, owner of small plots of land.
Then, it was the turn of their son Giuseppe who expanded them and, finally, left them to their children Cristina, Francesco, Gianni and Lorenzo.
But the most precious legacy guarded today by the Altamore siblings is their passion for quality grain and respect for the times and ways of nature.
“A passion,” says Cristina Altamore, owner of the company since 2006, “that we cultivate with great attention to the land and the making of our products.
In the sixty or so acres on the slopes of Mount Genuardo, in the oriented nature reserve of the same name, the Altamore family organically grows Senatore Cappelli ancient wheat and, together, the dream of a closed supply chain.
“Weare basically farmers,” says Cristina Altamore. “In our land we grow mostly wheat, but there are also vineyards and olive groves. Perpetuating Papa Giuseppe’s dream and commitment, we focus on the closed supply chain, alternating wheat cultivation with leguminous plants that are able to remineralize the soil, which is then fertilized with manure from the cattle we raise.”
The result of this virtuous path is a high quality bronze-drawn organic whole wheat pasta. “Our predilection for whole wheat,” says Cristina Altamore, “stems from the need to produce a pasta that preserves the organoleptic qualities of wheat germ, guaranteeing important nutritional values. In addition, our pasta has a very low glycemic index and zero, I say zero, simple sugars.” In short, it tastes good and is good for your health.
A goal achieved thanks to the synergy activated with Molino San Giuseppe of Chiusa Sclafani and the pasta factories Stallone of Salemi and Minardo of Modica. Not just pasta, though. Among the Altamore farm products shipped throughout Europe are semolina and lentils. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the Altamore farm is one of the members of the Distretto rurale di qualità dei Sicani, the collective brand for the recognition and enhancement of Sicani.
