In Santo Stefano Quisquina
day on biodiversity
toward the States-General of the Sicans
At the Citadel of Associations
Friday, May 17 conference
between protection and development opportunities
An entire day dedicated to biodiversity studies, aimed at drawing up a manifesto for the States General of the Sicans. On Friday, May 17, starting at 9 a.m., at the Citadel of Associations in Santo Stefano Quisquina, professionals in the field, university professors, scholars, representatives of institutions, associations, environmental guides and citizens who care about their territory will meet.
“Biodiversity Between Resource and Opportunity” is the title of the conference focused on the theme of ecosystem diversity in the Sicani area, included in the project of “Of Water and Land,” supported by the Foundation with the South, in view of the handover to the community of the Water Educational Laboratory intended to do training and education around the themes of respect for nature.
“The goal,” explains Salvatore Presti, who is part of one of the promoting associations, “is to try to speak with one voice; to promote synergistic action, developing a discourse on biodiversity understood as protection and opportunity for those who do business as well. In this sense, at the end of the study day a manifesto of the States General of the Sicani will be drawn up, an annual appointment in which the protagonists of territorial development at any level and policy makers will meet to take stock of the situation and give each other shared programmatic lines for the coming years.”
Friday’s day will be divided into two phases: during the morning, which will be attended by students from local high schools and technical colleges, university professors and land-use planning experts will speak, addressing the topic of biodiversity from the perspective of environmental, architectural, protection and development opportunities.
In the afternoon, after the brunch prepared by the students of the hotel institute of Bivona, the protagonist will be the workshop with four discussion tables focused on urban planning, tourism promoted by the associations that operate in various capacities in the area, development opportunities and on the critical issues that plague this geographical area; the latter table will be run exclusively by the youth of the area.
“Forbidden to complain, however,” Presti says, “our intent is to promote a proactive approach. A cultural snapshot is needed; a new vocabulary is needed. For young people who decide to stay and bet on their future in their own land, staying should not imply the idea that you stay in a problematic land. In this sense, Friday’s study day represents an absolute novelty, because it brings together and brings into dialogue all those who live and work in the area.”
Biodiversity as a development opportunity, therefore, as highlighted by the recent European legislation on biodiversity; an opportunity that in order to be exploited to the fullest, according to the conference organizers, must aim at spatial planning that starts precisely from the idea of biodiversity thought of as a development opportunity and as an opportunity not to be missed.
