San Biagio Platani – March 31

The Easter Arches

An open-air cathedral made of bread. And walking through it almost feels like being in a fairy tale, so much so that the eyes sparkle with wonder at the sight of such bold and sumptuous architecture. But it’s all real, indeed the preparation of the Easter Bows in San Biagio Platani perpetuates one of the oldest and most scenic traditions on the entire island.

An endeavor in which much of the village participates, getting passionate about a transgenerational competition between brotherhoods, pitting the “Signurara” faithful to Jesus against the “Madunnara” devoted to Mary.

From the elderly to the children, who, with the example of the older ones, learn from an early age the art of artistic bread-making, everyone makes a contribution; and already months before Easter, the village is transformed into a large workshop, with warehouses scattered throughout the town, which become creative forges. Strolling the streets of the main street under these works of art is a thrill not to be missed, as is meeting a generous community proud of its traditions.
