Burgio – March 19

Feast of St. Joseph

Before we get to the actual holiday, tradition dictates that from the first Wednesday after Christmas to March 19, “St. Joseph Wednesdays” are celebrated. Every week, devotees recite the Novena of the Saint.

On March 19, the tradition of the table set for the poor is perpetuated in Burgio as in other towns in Sicily. By promise or vow, the faithful prepare food which they offer, in relation to the grace received, to at least three poor (the number recalls that of the members of the Holy Family) called“saints.” From house to house, open doors allow people to admire the tables set and vegetables, sweets and the characteristic bread are given to devotees.
