Feast of St. Joseph

In honor of the saint, there are numerous local dishes that we find in the so-called “Artaru di San Giseppi,” set up in the homes of faithful families. Set with precious embroidered tablecloths, the “altars” are laid against the wall of a room, on which is hung an ancient blanket with a picture of St. Joseph or the Holy Family in the center.

Among flowers, lentil plants and sprouted wheat, symbols of prosperity, the votive bread is presented in a variety of shapes, representing now the hand of the saint, now a fish, a horse, a hen… Also typical are the cucciddati, doughnut-shaped sweets and sfinci with ricotta cream. St. Joseph’s menu also includes vegetable dishes, such as thistles, fennel, broccoli and asparagus mixed with eggs and cheese and fried in boiling oil. Also characteristic is pasta with muddica, bread crumbs baked in the oven and mixed with honey and grated chocolate.
