Holy Week

The rituals of Holy Week in Giuliana are taken care of by the Confraternity of Mary Most Holy of the Seven Sorrows, which in ancient times included the town’s most honored gentlemen and laborers.

Even today, the memory of the privileges enjoyed by this congregation is still alive in popular memory.

During Holy Week, a relic of the Holy Shroud, donated to Giuliana by Frederick II of Aragon, who made several stays in Giuliana’s castle, is displayed on Tuesday. Frederick II got the relic from his sister Saint Elizabeth of Portugal.

St. Joseph, March 19

In honor of the saint, there are numerous local dishes that we find in the so-called “Artaru di San Giseppi,” set up in the homes of faithful families. Set with precious embroidered tablecloths, the “altars” are laid against the wall of a room, on which is hung an ancient blanket with a picture of St. Joseph or the Holy Family in the center.
Among flowers, lentil plants and sprouted wheat, symbols of prosperity, the votive bread is presented in a variety of shapes, representing now the hand of the saint, now a fish, a horse, a hen… Also typical are the cucciddati, doughnut-shaped sweets and sfinci with ricotta cream. St. Joseph’s menu also includes vegetable dishes, such as thistles, fennel, broccoli and asparagus mixed with eggs and cheese and fried in boiling oil. Also characteristic is pasta with muddica, bread crumbs baked in the oven and mixed with honey and grated chocolate.

Patronal feast of Our Lady of Hearing, Sept. 3

Through the streets of the village, an evocative procession accompanies the simulacrum of the patron saint placed on the artistic vara, along the streets of the medieval village. Organized by the Confraternity of Mary Most Holy of the Agonizing, the celebrations in honor of the patron saint begin a few days earlier with the recitation of the “seven allegories” of Mary Most Holy of the Hearing of Giuliana and the recitation of the Rosary in dialect. Very impressive on the day of the patron saint’s day is the procession with the fercolo at nightfall, which ends with the traditional fireworks.
